One Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) game ranger was on Wednesday gunned down by the suspected poacher at   Karuma wildlife reserve in Murchison falls conservation area.

Private game ranger identified as Anthony Twesigye, a resident of Rubona cell in Kamwenge town council, Kamwenge district shot dead by suspected poacher while he was on duty.

Conservation area manager Murchison falls conservation area; Tom Obong Okello has confirmed the incident and said the incident that occurred at 5:00 Pm while the ranger went for their daily patrol in the area of Adibu and Ayago Bridge.

He said the deceased was together with other two game rangers by the time he was killed 24 km from Karuma, East of Karuma-Arua road 1 km inside the park when they landed poachers who were believed to have been hunting buffalo.

Twesigye’s coleagues recalled that as they were moving toward western direction of the park they show a hard of about 20 buffaloes coming directed to them and after short time they heard gun shots. They explained that, in the process of exchanging fire, Twesigye was put out of action.

The poachers are believed to have come from Koch Lii Sub County in Nwoya district or Acimi in Myene sub county Oyam district. This is a second time in a space of two years for game rangers to be killed after another one was also killed in East Madi wildlife reserve, Murchison falls conservation area.

By the time of filing this report, Twesigye’s body had been taken to Kiryandongo general hospital for post mortem.
