Seven people have been arrested for allegedly conning Regina Kajura, the wife to the former 1st Deputy Premier, Henry Muganwa Kajura of Shillings 80 million.
The suspects are identified as Rashid Kwizera of Kyangwali sub-county, Joseph Bamuson, Julius Agaba, Nicholas Mucakazi and a one Magezi, all residents of Hoima town.
According to police, early this year, Mucakazi and the group approached Mrs. Kajura with a White man, whom they claimed was a contractor in need of stone gravel for road construction.
The group reportedly convinced Mrs. Kajura to sell the ‘Road contractor’ the stones on the family land in Kapapi in Kigorobya Sub counties at the sum of Shillings 3 billion. It was agreed that Mr. Kajura pays the brokers and also meets the expenses of laboratory tests to ascertain their suitability of the gravel before they wire 3 billion shilling on her account.
After signing the document sealed off deal Ministers wife started paying the Money in installments from March until when completed the payment in April. The money accumulated to Shillings 80 million.
Mrs Kajura was forced to file a police complaint when she waited for the pay of sh3 billion on her bank account in vain.
The officer in charge of crime at Hoima police station Zakaria Mbabazi confirmed the arrest of the suspects adding that the suspects were picked up from Hoima last week by Police Flying Squad and transferred to the CIID headquarters Kibuli in Kampala for interrogation.
Mucakazi one of the suspects, who claims to be a relative to Mrs. Kajura admits to have led the group to Kajura’s home in Kitoba but says he doesn’t know much about them.
According to Mucakazi, he was only approached by the suspects because of his relationship to Mrs. Kajura. He also denies knowledge of the Shillings 80million, Mrs. Kajura spent, saying they were only paid Shillings 14 million. He however doesn’t rule out the possibility of Mrs. Kajura paying the group more money, when he left her with them.
Mucakazi and Bamusoni were key in Kajura’s campaigns in an attempt to retain the Hoima Municipality Parliamentary seat. Since Kajura lost the 2016 elections, there has been a reported rift with some of his campaigners, he accuses of swindling millions of his campaign fund.
