The district production officer Kiryandongo, Christopher Owiny has closed an abattoir in Karuma town board in Mutunda Sub County Kiryandongo district due to its poor and unhygienic conditions.
Speaking to our reporter on Thursday, Owiny said that he closed the abattoir after having made inspection with the district health inspector, Emmanuel Rupiny on Wednesday and found that the whole area was full of garbage pilled around and realized the area was contaminated.
Owiny said that, the current abattoir was constructed by Mutunda Sub County two years ago and it has been serving the people of Karuma town board very well until the establishment of Karuma Hydro Power project which due to increased population led to careless dumping of garbage around it.
The district production officer said that, he has already written to the officer in charge of Karuma police station informing him to enforce the closure of the abattoir so that those who will not comply are arrested and prosecuted in courts of law because the area is hosting very many people, both local and foreigners.
Owiny directed the sub county chief Mutunda only identified as Ogwang to get another area where animals can be slaughtered as the abattoir is being prepared into a state that is fit for use.
However; Ogwang, the area sub county chief declined to make any comment over the matter.
Karuma town board is steadily developing due to increasing number of people in the area who are being attracted there by the ongoing construction of Karuma Hydro Electric power dam and it is estimated over 5000 people both skilled and casual labors are employed there.
